North American Society for the Sociology of Sport (NASSS)

Eli A. Wolff was a force for good. As an activist and a champion for justice, he gave much of his life to the promotion of equitable opportunity and inclusion in sport, particularly for people with disabilities. He served as an advocate and educator to the public, as well as to his academic community. Eli was a Paralympian, a scholar, and an agent for social change.

When we lost Eli, we lost one of our greatest leaders.

To honor Eli’s memory, his family, in collaboration with the North American Society for the Sociology of Sport (NASSS), is creating an endowed memorial fund to support emerging scholars and activists who engage in research that improves opportunities for athletes with disabilities and who will create meaningful change.

Proceeds from the Eli A. Wolff Memorial Fund for Disability Sport will be used to support scholarships and research grants for undergraduate students, doctoral students, post-doctoral fellows, and early career faculty who advance disability sport in the following areas:

  • Inclusion
  • Intersectionality with other under-represented groups
  • Sport for development
  • Policy and advocacy
  • Public education

The program will be managed by NASSS, and applications will be reviewed by scholars in the field of sport for development and sport for social change, along with representatives from Eli’s family. Awards will be presented yearly at the NASSS Annual Meeting, and all awardees are expected to present the results of the work during a plenary session at the following year’s meeting.

It is our expectation that the Eli A. Wolff Memorial Fund for Disability Sport will result in the creation of a new generation of leaders who will be important change agents and carry forward Eli’s legacy in perpetuity.
